New Monthly Discussion Group

Posted in Uncategorized at 16:00 by 5carrolls

Hello Everyone,

In addition to our weekly English Bible Study, which you can find information for here on our website, we have decided to also begin a monthly English Spiritual Discussion Group, which will cover everyday relevant topics, such as “Let go of the past to focus on the present,” “Accept who God made you to be,” “Turn your anger into something beautiful” and many others.  We will conduct small “pre-activities” designed to get the conversation going and introduce the theme for the evening.  We will then view a short video with a spiritual, personal theme and then have group discussion afterward. This is a group for everyone, whether you’re a believer in God or not.  The topics we will cover are relevant to our lives today and will mean something different personally for each individual.

Our first meeting is tonight at 7 p.m. at the Gemeinde Christi building on Tieckstr. 10, Dresden 01099

The meetings will usually be held on the 4th Friday of each month, so the next meeting after tonight is already set for October 23rd, same time, same place.  If you would like to receive a reminder by email, just contact us.

We’d love to see you there!

Important Update!

Posted in Uncategorized at 14:41 by dresdensooner

Our English Bible study is getting a face-lift. Starting in October we begin meeting on Wednesday nights at 7:30 PM, that is 19:30 Uhr. We will meet and discuss various books from the Bible and alternatively books on various Christian topics. Most recently we read through The Case for Christ: the student edtion by Lee Stroebel . We will be reading through the book of Lamentations as the previous post describes.

In addition to the move to Wednesday night, we will not be meeting for the next two weeks because of the annual men’s and women’s retreats. So you have a little more than two weeks to get your English ready for the restart on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 at 7:30 PM. I hope to see you then.

When Life Gives You Lemons . . .

Posted in Uncategorized at 14:26 by dresdensooner

Pre-lemonadeThere is a saying in English: When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. The message tells us to take our problems and find a way to turn them into benefits. Lemons by themselves are sour, but add some sugar and water and perhaps special ingredient and suddenly you have a refreshing drink. That sounds easy enough, right?

But what do you do if all you have is lemons? No water in sight and certainly no sugar. I am sure we have all felt hopelessness at oneToo many lemons time or another, a time when there seemed to be only problems with no way around them and no one to help. Starting in October we are going to be reading through a book from the old testament called Lamentations or Klagelieder in German. It is a book of poems describing the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. Jerusalem was the capital of Israel and the location of God’s temple. As God’s chosen people, the Israelites expected Jerusalem to stand forever. Imagine how they felt after their city was besieged, defeated and plundered. After most of the inhabitants were led away into captivity and those left behind had to cope with a desolate city, these laments were written to describe how utterly lost the Israelites felt.

How did they respond? What did they do? How did they cope with the lowest point in their lives? These are questions we are going to answer during this study. I know that the answers we find together will help us deal with our own problems today. I hope you will join us.
